| | Peter Gipson in Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, captured this June sunset - one of the year's latest sunsets - in 2018. The vertical streak is what's called a sun pillar. Thanks, Peter! Submit your image to EarthSky. | | |
| Latest sunsets follow summer solstice | | Latest sunsets - and latest evening twilights - are happening around now for much of the Northern Hemisphere. They always come in late June and early July. Meanwhile, the Northern Hemisphere's longest day fell on the June 20-21 solstice. For the Southern Hemisphere, your latest sunrises are happening around now. Plus, a word about 3 different kinds of twilight. The first was to be installed June 16, but was delayed due to technical difficulties. Then, on Sunday, June 20, a 2nd spacewalk by 2 astronauts resulted in the successful installation of the first of 6 new ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (dubbed iROSAs). And now the 3rd spacewalk is scheduled for June 25, with the aim of installing the 2nd iROSA. When all 6 are installed, ISS will get about a 20% to 30% boost in power, aimed at supporting at least another decade of science operations. | | | Zubenelgenubi is Libra’s alpha star | Zubenelgenubi, aka Alpha Librae, is nearly always shown with its brother star in Libra, Zubeneschamali. Notice they lie between 2 brighter stars: Antares in the constellation Scorpius and Spica in the constellation Virgo. This chart faces south around 10 p.m. in mid-to-late June. Libra is a faint, diamond-shaped pattern of stars. Maps created with Stellarium by AstroBob. Used with permission. Read more. | | | | |

| | Solstice sunset from Penang, Malaysia | View at EarthSky Community Photos. | EarthSky friend Michael Teoh in Penang, Malaysia, used a telescope with solar filters to capture details on the setting sun on the day of the solstice, June 21. He wrote: “First successful attempt at taking a sunset image in the hydrogen alpha wavelength. Despite some thin clouds, the surface features can be seen clearly, including the sunspot in AR2833, a long filament nearby, and a few faint prominences near the limb. The result is beyond my expectation, given that the sun was low in western sky at just 13 degrees above horizon.” What a beauty. Thank you, Michael! | | |
